The best tip I got was to not be afraid to experiment. Feel free to go beyond the diagrams. Use more pieces to get the look you want to make the wings curve in or out, or the head to curve a little more. I also saw swans with a ring of blue underneath them. This made them look like they were swimming in water. Now that you got the basic design down, work with color to create patterns. Have fun!
