Golden Venture Folding

Ok, I know many of you know what this is about already, but this is for those who don’t.

The art form, which we call 3D origami, actually has an interesting story behind it. On June 6, 1993, at around 2 a.m., the Golden Venture — a ship bearing 286 illegal immigrants from China (mostly from the province of Fujian) along with 13 crew members — ran aground on Rockaway Beach in Queens, New York after a mutiny by the smugglers. The immigrants were held in custody in US prisons throughout the country. In the York County Prison, the immigrants started making sculptures based on Chinese modular paper folding. These models were later gifted to those who aided the refugees, and were sold at charity fund raisers. Over ten thousand models were made. Media coverage and numerous exhibitions made this art form popular throughout the world. And this is the story how Golden Venture Folding aka 3D origami came into being.

Hope I didn’t bore you with this, but I thought I should share this information with all my fellow origami lovers.
